A Brief Note On Broken Windows Theory And Community Policing

Broken Windows theory is important to community policing. Wilson and Kelling(1989) showed that crime and disorder are related, which shows if police are able to keep the community, environment in order it can prevent crime. Popularity of community policing was high in the late 20th century with 85% having some community policing involvement with police departments (Skogan 2004, which was even more popular with big cites. Community involvement is a key to community policing and at the end of the 20th century 70% of departments had meetings with citizens (BJS 2001). A main concept of community policing is to create a positive relationship with the community. This allows community to help police prioritize its goals and change it tactics which in return the community is able to help itself. Community policing should be unique to the city since each city has its own problem, an example of this would be Los Angeles wouldn t have the same exact tactics as a city in New Hampshire because th ere are different problems and a different culture in each. If community believes its main problem is gang member than the police needs to prioritize that issue but if the community considers its main problem is prostitution this needs to be dealt with by the police. This is much different than traditional policing in the way that the police prioritize their assignments. I wrapped up my backpack, with but some books, some highlighters, a wallet, and a hardy iron bottle. Unchained my bike, drifting through the crowd, I began my afternoon of pilgrimage away from the highschool campus when classes were dismissed, towards the place of my own. My bike carried me through the gate that resembled the scenes of 1920s China. The smog was gradually replaced by the fume of nameless flowers scattering up the trees, on the ground, or in the pond. The roaring noise at school or on the road seemed anachronistic. What comes in to my ears were the melody of birds, dancing of water near the fountain, and the whizzing of my bike. The trails were mostly covered by foliage, themselves covered by immense shades between transparent greenness and checkered-board twilight. It’s a zen of academics, a hermitage for disturbed minds. There I am, a sublime, 11-story building without gilded decoration. Though it is a public building of the university, everything was on my own routine. The standard deviation is a descriptive statistic that tells us about the dispersion—or spread—of a set of data. Just like using many other formulas in statistics, the calculation of a standard deviation is a fairly tedious process to do by hand. Fortunately, statistical software speeds up this calculation considerably. Statistical Software There are many software packages that do statistical calculations, but one of the most readily accessible programs is Microsoft Excel. Although we could use a step-by-step process using the formula for a standard deviation for our calculation, it is possible to complete this calculation using one Excel function. Populations and Samples Before moving on to the specific commands used to calculate a standard deviation, it is important to distinguish between a population and a sample. A population is the set of every individual being studied. A sample is a subset of a population. The difference between these two concepts means the difference in how a standard deviation is calculated. Standard Deviation in Excel To use Excel to determine the sample standard deviation of a set of quantitative data, type these numbers into a group of adjacent cells in a spreadsheet. In an empty cell type what is in the quotation marks STDEV.S(  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Following this type the location of the cells where the data is and then close the parentheses with ​). This can alternatively be done by use of the following procedure. If our data is located in cells A2 to A10, then (omitting the quotation marks) STDEV.S(A2:A10) will obtain the sample standard deviation of the entries in cells A2 to A10. Rather than typing the location of the cells where our data is located, we can use a different method. This involves typing the first half of the formula STDEV.S(, and clicking on the first cell where the data is located. A colored box will appear around the cell that we have selected. We then drag the mouse until we have selected all of the cells that contain our data. We finish this by closing the parentheses. Cautions There a few cautions that must be made in using Excel for this calculation. We need to make sure that we do not mix up out functions. The Excel formula STDEV.S closely resembles STDEV.P. The former is typically the necessary formula for our calculations, as it is used when our data is a sample from a population. In the event that our data constitutes the entire population being studied, then we would want to use STDEV.P. Another thing that we must be careful about concerns the number of data values. In the most realistic way, he integrated a portion of his life into a book that has become an international bestseller and beloved classic, and it is sold in at least seventy countries. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in a family whose father was a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry, mother who taught Farsi and history at a high school in Kabul, and a Hazara man who worked for his family for a couple of years. The Foreign Ministry then moved the Hosseini family to Paris, but when they were ready to return back to Kabul, there was a bloody communist coup and an invasion by the Soviet Army. While practicing medicine as an internist, Khaled Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner, which encompassed the extraordinary life of a Pashtun boy, named Amir, who transformed from being selfish to being a mature, selfless, and redeemed man. The book was introduced with a haunting flashback memory that dated back twenty-seven years ago from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. One day Amir received a phone call from Rahim Khan, an old friend, telling him â€Å"here is a way to be good again† (Hosseini 2). Tragic, dramatic, and regretful sins that have been hidden in the depths of Amir’s guilty heart, led him to search for redemption. However, did Amir really want to help himself?Amir grew up in a wealthy house with a complicated past: a mother who died giving birth to him, a family servant’s son, Hassan, who turned out to be his one and only loyal friend, and a father, Baba, who favored Hassan more openly than h. . ped up. It was not until Amir was suffocating with these haunting memories had he searched for redemption. Amir owed his life to Hassan, but since he is not physically alive, he dedicated his life in taking care of Sohrab. The symbolism of the scar left on Amir’s lip after the fight with Assef, signifies that the memories of Hassan are still there, but the guilt is slowly being relieved and forgiven. The road to redemption was taken on a personal level being put â€Å"in the shoes of characters who are radically different than they are† (qtd. in Milvy). The way Amir treated Hassan was due to their social class difference as well as for Amir’s immaturity. It was after realizing all the cruel deeds he had done was the time for Amir to repay, to forgive, and to find redemption. â€Å"And that, I believe, is what true redemption is, when guilt leads to good† (Hosseini 302).
